GUWAHATI: Normal vehicular movement between Assam and Meghalaya has been restored after road blockades were withdrawn following deliberations between the Meghalaya Government and protesting organisations, Assam Minister Atul Bora said on Sunday.

Bora said Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister S. Dhar conveyed the development to him after discussions with protesting organisations in the state.
“I am pleased to share that normal vehicular movement has now been restored between Assam & Meghalaya, as well as across Meghalaya,” Bora said in a post on X.
He thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for their intervention and cooperation in resolving the situation.
Bora also appreciated organisations and stakeholders in both states for responding positively to appeals for peace and withdrawing the road blockades.
“Assam & Meghalaya are not merely neighbours; we are sister States, connected by deep-rooted cultural, economic and people-to-people ties,” he said.
He urged both states to build on the spirit of cooperation and ensure that peace, harmony and brotherhood prevail in the region.
The restoration of normal movement comes days after violence broke out in Shillong on August 19, when Assam-registered vehicles and their occupants were targeted, leaving travellers stranded and disrupting movement between the two states.
The Meghalaya government had earlier assured that strong action would be taken against those involved in the violence. A Special Investigation Team was constituted to identify and prosecute those responsible, while more than 3,700 Assam-registered vehicles were safely escorted out of Meghalaya following the incident.
