According to reports indicate that Iyer, who recently captained Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, will lead the national side in the shortest format. Tilak Varma is also expected to be named vice-captain.
The move marks another major leadership change in Indian cricket. Iyer has not played a T20I for India since December 2023, but is now set to return directly as captain.
The decision follows a difficult period for Suryakumar Yadav, whose recent performances with the bat have been below expectations. Despite leading India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year and maintaining an unbeaten record in bilateral series, his form has dipped significantly over the past year.
Iyer, meanwhile, enjoyed a successful IPL 2026 campaign, scoring 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81, including a century against Lucknow Super Giants.
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to receive his maiden India call-up for the two-match T20I series against Ireland. If selected, the Rajasthan Royals opener will become the youngest player ever named in an Indian squad.
Sooryavanshi had a remarkable IPL 2026 season, scoring 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.31 and winning both the Orange Cap and Most Valuable Player awards. Before the Ireland series, he is set to represent India A in a tri-series involving Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A starting June 9.
India will play two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28 before travelling to England for a five-match T20I series from July 1 to 11.
