Mandhana, who made her India debut in 2013, had served as Harmanpreet’s deputy and has previously led the national side in 18 T20Is and four ODIs.
The left-handed opener recently became the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket, surpassing former India captain Mithali Raj. She also holds the record for the most international centuries in women’s cricket across formats, with 18 hundreds.
Mandhana has been a key figure in the growth of Indian women’s cricket across formats and has also established herself as a leader in domestic and franchise cricket. She most recently guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026.
Speaking about her appointment, Mandhana said leading India was a “very special honour” and expressed gratitude to the BCCI, selectors, teammates and supporters for trusting her with the responsibility.
“To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour. Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply,” she said.
Mandhana also acknowledged Harmanpreet’s contribution during her tenure as captain.
“I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey,” she said.
Mandhana added that she understood the responsibility attached to the role and looked forward to working with the team as India moves into a new phase.
India’s first assignment under Mandhana’s captaincy will be a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe at home, beginning October 16. The teams will then play a three-match ODI series.
