GUWAHATI: Two police constables have been arrested in Assam's Sribhumi district for allegedly robbing ₹14 lakh from a businessman’s aide, while a sub-inspector allegedly involved, is on the run.

The alleged incident happened on September 10 and, according to Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Sribhumi, Pallab Jyoti Kalita, the team used the authority of the police to rob the businessman’s aide in the name of conducting a search and used a government vehicle for the operation.
He said that the businessman from Sribhumi had given ₹25 lakh to his aide to deliver the money to Dharmanagar in Tripura. While travelling by train, the aide reached Patharkandi railway station, where he was detained.
"They asked the person to go with them, forcibly took him into a Bolero and drove him towards the Chandkhira area where he was allegedly robbed of ₹14 lakh in cash. The person later informed the police and we registered a case," Kalita said.
Patharkandi police station sub-inspector M. Nongthaiba Singh allegedly instructed Lance Naik Anwar Hussain and constable Sajal Suklabaidya to pick up the man from the railway station using a government vehicle.
"We registered a case against them and arrested Anwar Hussain and Sajal Suklabaidya but Nongthaiba Singh is still absconding.
During a search of their houses, an amount of the robbed money was recovered and the arrested constables are being questioned," he added.
The arrested constables have told police that the sub-inspector had planned the operation initially and guided the team throughout.
They said that information regarding the transfer of cash was also shared by him and that he had exact details of the person travelling with the cash.
Police said that the two arrested constables were produced before the court and sent to judicial custody.
