GUWAHATI: A man has been taken into custody in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 67-year-old woman in Sonari, located in Assam’s Charaideo district, officials said.
Speaking to GPlus, an official from Kakotibari Police Station informed that the woman was returning home late on the night of Thursday, April 23, after attending a local feast when she was reportedly attacked in an open field in the Kakotibari area. The assailant is alleged to have assaulted her before killing her at the spot.
Law enforcement authorities arrived shortly after receiving information about the incident and launched an investigation. The suspect was arrested later that night and has been identified as Babu Murha, also known by the alias ‘Kolaguti’. During questioning, he is said to have made incriminating statements. As per reports, the victim may have been strangled before being sexually assaulted.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, with many gathering outside the Kakotibari Police Station to protest and demand strict action. The situation grew tense when a group of protesters attempted to enter the station premises, reportedly seeking to confront the accused.
Authorities have since stepped up security in the area to maintain law and order. A police official confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further legal proceedings are underway.
