GUWAHATI: The Assam government has announced a series of relief and rehabilitation measures for people affected by the ongoing floods, including enhanced financial assistance for families of deceased and missing persons, cash relief for severely affected households, and support for students who have lost educational materials.

Under the revised measures, families of people who died in flood-related incidents will receive the ₹4 lakh ex-gratia amount without the need for a post-mortem report. Families of persons who have remained missing for more than 30 days will also be eligible for ₹4 lakh ex-gratia assistance, as per due process.
In addition, families of deceased flood victims will receive ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, over and above the ₹4 lakh ex-gratia assistance, taking the total assistance to ₹9 lakh per deceased person.
The government will also provide ₹15,000 in immediate cash relief to more than one lakh severely flood-affected families to meet urgent essential needs.
The Orunodoi scheme will resume from August 1. Beneficiaries in Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat and Sivasagar will receive ₹2,500 for August.
The government has also announced special educational assistance for students in severely flood-affected districts from August 1. The measures include: ₹1,000 for HS students, ₹3,000 for UG students, ₹5,000 for PG students, free textbooks for all school students and assistance for purchasing school uniforms.
Students who have lost their Class X and Class XII marksheets and certificates in the floods will also be provided free duplicate copies.
The government will begin assessing damage to houses, livestock, fisheries and crops from August 3. Compensation will subsequently be provided to eligible families based on the assessment.
The measures come as Assam continues to deal with the impact of the latest wave of floods. As of July 28, the flood situation remained serious, with 3.32 lakh people affected across 622 villages in seven districts, while the flood-related death toll had risen to 75.
