GUWAHATI: The New Delhi Declaration adopted by the 11 BRICS nations on Saturday, September 12, welcomed the Guwahati Declaration aimed at strengthening cooperation against drug trafficking and narcotics.

The 45-page declaration expressed concern over illicit drug production, trafficking and abuse worldwide, stating that the issue poses a serious threat to public security, health, safety and human well-being.
“We express concern over the situation with illicit drug production, trafficking, and abuse worldwide, and recognise that it seriously threatens public security, health, safety, and the well-being of humankind and undermines the sustainable development of States,” the declaration said.
The New Delhi Declaration also specifically acknowledged the Guwahati Declaration adopted by the heads of anti-drug agencies of BRICS nations at their meeting in July.
The Guwahati Declaration was adopted as a key step towards strengthening operational and technical cooperation among BRICS anti-drug agencies in tackling narcotics.
“We welcome the Guwahati Declaration issued by the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies, which would facilitate operational and technical cooperation among BRICS anti-drug agencies,” the New Delhi Declaration stated.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the reference to Guwahati in the New Delhi Declaration.
“Happy to see a reference to Guwahati in the New Delhi Declaration,” Sarma wrote on X.
The Chief Minister further said that with Assam sitting on a critical narcotics corridor, the adoption of the Guwahati Declaration in New Delhi was a “symbolic & powerful move.”
