Nagaon Lok Sabha Bypoll Records 17.68% Voter Turnout by 9 AM


 

GUWAHATI: Voting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll began at 7 AM on Tuesday, October 6, with 17.68% of voters casting their ballots by 9 AM, according to the latest Election Commission data.

A total of 19,02,009 voters are eligible to decide the fate of 15 candidates in the bypoll. Voting will continue until 5 PM.

Polling is being conducted at 2,112 stations, including five auxiliary polling stations. A total of 9,664 polling personnel have been deployed for the exercise.

The electorate comprises 9,58,595 male voters, 9,43,364 female voters and 50 voters from the third-gender category.

The Nagaon seat was won by the Congress in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The seat fell vacant after Pradyut Bordoloi left the Congress, joined the BJP and subsequently won the Dispur Assembly seat in the 2026 Assam Assembly election.

The BJP has fielded former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma, while the Congress has nominated former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal is also contesting, adding another key factor to the electoral contest.

Postal voting from home for voters aged above 85 years and identified persons with disabilities has already been completed under the relevant provisions of the Representation of the People Act.

Counting of votes will be held on October 9.
