Assam: Prime Accused in Nagaon’s Morikolong Robbery Case Injured in Accident


 

GUWAHATI: The prime accused in the high-profile Morikolong robbery case was seriously injured after a police vehicle carrying him met with a road accident in the Borghat area of Nagaon late Friday night, May 15.

The accused, identified as Rajjibul Islam, a resident of Lakhimpur, had been arrested in connection with the April 24 dacoity that had triggered widespread outrage across the district. According to police, a team from Nagaon Police was escorting Islam to a location to recover stolen gold ornaments linked to the robbery when another vehicle reportedly collided with the police vehicle.

Islam sustained serious injuries to both legs in the accident and was admitted to hospital, where he is undergoing treatment under strict police security. Two police personnel accompanying him were also reportedly injured in the collision.

The Morikolong robbery case had sparked fear and anger among residents after armed miscreants allegedly stormed into the residence of a local doctor, assaulted him and his wife, and fled with cash, gold ornaments and other valuables.

The doctor’s wife, Ruprekha Bhuyan, later succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Guwahati.
