According to the order issued by the Commissioner-cum-Principal Census Officer, no leave of any kind, including Casual Leave (CL), Earned Leave (EL), or Compensatory/Child Care Leave (CCL) will be granted to employees engaged in census duty, including trainers, field trainers, enumerators, supervisors, and other staff, without prior approval from the competent authority.
The order underscores the legal seriousness of census work, warning that failure to perform census duties, asking offensive questions, or tampering with census documents can attract imprisonment of up to three years along with a fine of ₹1,000, under Section 11 of the Census Act, 1948.
All Heads of Departments and concerned employees have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the order.
The directive comes as authorities begin groundwork for Census 2027, India's next decennial population count, with civic bodies across the country expected to mobilise large numbers of personnel for enumeration and supervisory roles in the coming months.
