GUWAHATI: The Assam government has decided to resume regular classes in schools across flood-affected districts, including Sivasagar and Charaideo, from August 10, even as several institutions continue to deal with damage caused by the recent floods.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said the decision was taken keeping in mind the academic interests of students and to ensure that their education is not further disrupted by the flood situation.
Speaking with the media, Pegu said there was no reason for schools that were not affected by floods to remain closed and such institutions could resume classes as usual.
He said Sivasagar district has around 1,250 schools, out of which 545 were affected by floods. While non-affected schools can continue their regular academic activities, flood-affected schools that have been repaired, sanitised, and are in a condition to reopen by August 10 will also be allowed to resume classes.
“For the remaining affected schools that are not yet ready to reopen, the government is exploring alternative arrangements to ensure that classes can continue without further disruption,” Pegu said.
The Education Minister added that the government was committed to ensuring continuity in students’ education despite the challenges faced by flood-affected schools.
The decision comes as several flood-affected areas are still recovering from inundation, with damage to school infrastructure posing challenges to the resumption of regular classes.
