GUWAHATI: Fifty-seven people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals were detained by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Kamakhya railway station in Guwahati in the evening on October 8. The group was intercepted aboard the Brahmaputra Mail at the Maligaon-based station.

According to the RPF, the group is suspected to have travelled from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir before reaching Assam. Further details regarding their identities and travel documents are awaited.
The detention comes amid a series of arrests in Guwahati over the past two days. At least 17 suspected Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in separate operations for allegedly entering India illegally, according to media reports.
Senior police officer Kulendra Nath Deka said five suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained from the general coach of the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express during routine checking near Paltan Bazar railway station on Tuesday.
According to police, the five had allegedly entered India through Dawki in Meghalaya and arrived in Guwahati on October 5. They had reportedly stayed at a hotel in the city.
Police sources said one of the arrested individuals disclosed information about the hotel during interrogation. Following an examination of CCTV footage and other evidence, a case was registered at Pan Bazar Police Station.
The repeated detention of suspected Bangladeshi nationals in Assam raises questions about the effectiveness of border security and how individuals allegedly entering India illegally are managing to travel across states and reach the region.
