The decision was taken at the state Cabinet meeting on Friday, October 9. The proposed academy will be established near Guwahati.
The academy is named after Lovlina Borgohain, the Olympic medallist from Assam, who recently enjoyed a memorable campaign at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, winning gold in the women’s 75kg category.
Lovlina began her campaign with a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision victory over South Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the quarter-finals, securing a medal and advancing to the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, she defeated Kazakhstan’s reigning 70kg world champion Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a closely fought split decision. The victory made Lovlina the first Indian woman boxer to reach two Asian Games finals, having also reached the title bout at Hangzhou 2022.
The proposed academy is expected to support boxing training and help develop aspiring athletes in Assam.
