‘Women Should Feel Safe, Every Citizen Should Have Faith in Policing’: Governor’s Message to Assam Police


 

GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Thursday, October 1, called for greater public trust in policing, saying women should feel safe, the underprivileged should feel supported by the police and every citizen should have confidence that their concerns will be heard.

Acharya was speaking at the 75th Assam Police Day celebration held at the 1st Assam Commando Battalion in Mandakata. The occasion marked a significant milestone in the history of the Assam Police.

The Governor said public trust is the greatest strength of policing and stressed the importance of a people-centric approach. He said the approach gives meaning to the Assam Police motto, “For the welfare of the people, in the service of the people.”

Appreciating the modernisation of the police force, Acharya highlighted the use of data analytics, cyber forensics, digital evidence, CCTV, drones, command-and-control systems and modern communication technologies in policing and security operations.

He also referred to the foundation stone laying for the new headquarters of the 10th Battalion of Assam Police by Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this year, describing the proposed infrastructure as an important step towards strengthening the force.

The Governor also praised the Assam Police's action against narcotic substances and called for greater momentum in the campaign for a drug-free Assam. He said drug abuse affects young people, families and society as a whole.

Acharya also referred to his Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padyatra and urged the police to actively contribute to the campaign against drug abuse.

Acknowledging the demanding nature of police service, the Governor urged personnel to uphold courage, sensitivity, discipline and integrity while discharging their duties.

“Make your courage your strength, make sensitivity your identity, make technology your capability, make discipline your foundation, make integrity your reputation, and make public service your highest responsibility,” he said.

The Governor expressed confidence that Assam Police would continue to uphold its legacy while adopting modern technology, professionalism and people-centric policing. He also extended his greetings to officers and personnel on the 75th Assam Police Day.

On the occasion, Acharya presented the President’s Medal to Additional Director General of Police Surendra Kumar, Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta, IGP Kankan Jyoti Saikia, IGP Indrani Baruah and IGP Ratna Singh.

Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, senior police officials and other dignitaries were also present at the event.
