₹32 Crore Approved for Bhupen Hazarika Museum in Guwahati’s Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra


 

GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet has approved ₹32 crore for the construction of the Bhupen Hazarika Museum at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati, aimed at preserving and showcasing the life, works, and legacy of the Bharat Ratna awardee.

Out of the total sanctioned amount, ₹13 crore will be provided by the North East Council (NEC), while the Assam government will contribute around ₹20 crore for the project.

Announcing the decision after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, May13, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that the year-long 100th birth centenary celebrations of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika will conclude on September 8, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The Chief Minister said the closing ceremony will be organised on a grand scale to honour the legendary singer, composer, lyricist, and cultural icon of Assam.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, popularly known as the “Bard of Brahmaputra,” was one of India’s most celebrated musicians and filmmakers. He was posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2019.

The centenary celebrations have featured cultural programmes, musical tributes, seminars, and events across Assam and other parts of the country over the past year.
