GUWAHATI: In a significant step towards strengthening digital policing, Assam Police has become the first state police agency in the Northeast to be registered as an Offline Verification Seeking Entity (OVSE) under the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

With this registration, Assam Police has also become only the third police force in the country to receive OVSE status.
The development will enable police personnel to verify Aadhaar credentials instantly by scanning the secure QR code on the Aadhaar card, even in areas with poor or no internet connectivity.
According to Assam Police, the facility is expected to be particularly useful in remote regions such as hill districts, char areas and border villages, where internet connectivity remains unreliable. The offline verification system will allow patrol teams to authenticate identities without depending on network availability.
Officials said the Aadhaar QR code carries a digitally signed, tamper-proof seal, making it significantly more difficult for criminals or illegal infiltrators to use forged or photocopied Aadhaar cards to mislead law enforcement agencies.
The OVSE registration is also expected to streamline several routine police services, including tenant verification, character verification, passport police verification and arms licence verification, by making the authentication process faster and more efficient.
Assam Police described the move as another step towards building a more efficient, secure and citizen-friendly policing system through the adoption of digital technology.
