Kamrup District Administration Observes ‘Day Against Superstitious Beliefs’ to Promote Scientific Temper


 

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup district administration on Wednesday, May 13 organised a programme to observe “Day Against Superstitious Beliefs”, aiming to raise awareness about scientific thinking and encourage social reform initiatives across the district.

The awareness event, organised by the District Social Welfare Department, Kamrup, was held at the auditorium of the Bongra Gaon Panchayat Office in Amingaon.

Several academicians and social activists attended the programme, including social worker Sujata Mishra, Pragjyotish College professor Abhijit Kumar Dutta, and Dakshin Kamrup Girls’ College Assistant Professor Shikhamini Bora.

As part of the programme, participants paid floral tributes to Padma Shri awardee Birubala Rabha, who is widely recognised for her efforts in fighting superstition and social evils in Assam. Speakers at the event highlighted her role in spreading awareness against harmful superstitious practices and promoting progressive social change, particularly in rural areas.

The discussions centred on the need for education, community participation and public awareness campaigns to eradicate superstition and strengthen social welfare initiatives.

The programme was conducted by Bhupen Bhattacharyya, District Social Welfare Officer of Kamrup. Officials from the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Sankalp Hub, Kamrup, Child Development Project Officers, supervisors, Anganwadi workers, members of Nari Adalat, college students, officials associated with women empowerment activities and self-help group members also took part in the event.
