GUWAHATI: Assam is set to expand its wildlife conservation infrastructure with a proposed ₹534-crore Wildlife Safari and Rescue Centre in Dibrugarh district, aimed at strengthening wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, veterinary care and research while promoting eco-tourism in Upper Assam.

The centre will be developed across approximately 235 hectares in the Namdang Reserved Forest under the Tingkhong Assembly constituency. Located around 20 km from Dibrugarh town and about 30 km from Dibrugarh airport, the facility is expected to become a new wildlife tourism destination in the region.
The project will be developed in two phases through the Assam Public Works Department.
The first phase, estimated at ₹259 crore, will include dedicated enclosures for tigers, rhinoceroses, leopards and bears. It will also feature a veterinary hospital and rescue centre for the treatment, rehabilitation and scientific management of wildlife.
The second phase, estimated at ₹275 crore, will focus on advanced research infrastructure and facilities for species including Asiatic lions, cheetahs, zebras and hippos.
Once completed, the centre is expected to provide an integrated facility for wildlife rescue, veterinary care, conservation, research and education.
The project is also expected to support eco-tourism and create employment opportunities in Upper Assam. Improved wildlife care infrastructure, along with responsible tourism, is expected to generate local economic opportunities and strengthen livelihoods around the conservation landscape.
The proposed centre is part of Assam’s broader efforts to strengthen its wildlife conservation infrastructure while developing sustainable tourism opportunities in the state.
