The detection was made at the Random X-BIS checkpoint at ASG Delhi. CISF personnel grew suspicious of a passenger's behaviour and flagged him for detailed screening. A review of CCTV footage then led officers to identify a second passenger travelling with him. Both men were booked to fly to Guwahati, with onward travel planned to Agartala.

When their baggage was put through detailed screening, officials recovered a combined ₹68,53,500 in cash from the two passengers.

The passengers were handed over, along with the cash, their baggage and travel documents, to Income Tax officials for further action. Some reports note the case was specifically routed to the Income Tax Department's Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) stationed at IGI Airport.

CISF, in its statement, credited the recovery to the vigilance, behavioural observation and alertness of its personnel in maintaining security at the country's busiest airport.

Unaccounted cash and currency seizures are fairly regular at IGI Airport, which handles some of the country's busiest domestic and international traffic. CISF has previously intercepted foreign currency hidden in trolley-bag handles, clothing, and even food items like meatballs and peanuts.
