GUWAHATI: Assam State Driver Association has suspended all Guwahati–Shillong and Shillong–Guwahati car services following the alleged targeting, vandalism and torching of Assam-registered vehicles during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) black-flag rally violence in Shillong on Wednesday, August 19.

The association said the decision was taken citing concerns over the safety of Assam-registered vehicles and drivers operating between the two cities. It strongly condemned the attacks and maintained that while everyone has the democratic right to protest, no one has the right to assault drivers, vandalise or torch vehicles, damage property or create an atmosphere of fear.
The association has placed several demands before the Meghalaya government, including an apology from Meghalaya Chief Minister and Transport Minister to the residence of Assam and drivers over the incident. It has also demanded appropriate compensation for all vehicles and drivers affected in the violence.
Among its other demands, the association has sought the immediate identification and arrest of those involved in the incident, along with strict legal action against them. It has further demanded a written assurance from the Meghalaya government regarding the safety and security of Assamese drivers working in the state.
The association clarified that its protest is not against any community, student organisation or ordinary resident of Meghalaya, but against violence, injustice and attacks on drivers. It warned that it would not remain silent over further incidents targeting Assam’s driver community and said it would continue its agitation until justice is delivered.
The association has also appealed for peace and harmony between the people of Assam and Meghalaya, while urging that such disputes be addressed through democratic means and the rule of law.
