GUWAHATI: As fans gathered at Zubeen Khetra in Sonapur on Saturday, September 19, to mark the first death anniversary of singer Zubeen Garg, many renewed their demand for justice, recalling Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement in the Assam Assembly that the singer’s death was a case of “plain and simple murder.”

Speaking to the media at Zubeen Khetra, AASU president Utpal Sarma said that since the Chief Minister had publicly described the incident as a murder and a case had been registered, the matter must be taken to its logical conclusion.
“The Chief Minister himself stated that it was a murder and a murder case was registered. Therefore, the murder must be proven, the culprits strictly punished, and only then will the fire burning for justice in the hearts of the Assamese people be doused,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister had stated in the Assam Assembly on November 25, 2025, that Zubeen Garg’s death while swimming in the sea in Singapore was a case of “plain and simple murder.”
Utpal Sarma further said that although people had physically bid farewell to the artiste from the same place a year ago, the demand for justice among the people of Assam remained strong.
“A year ago, everyone bid him farewell from this place. But I want to say again from this location that the fire burning in the hearts of the people of Assam demanding justice for Zubeen Garg has not been extinguished,” he said.
AASU chief adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya also paid tribute to the late singer and reiterated the call for justice.
“Today we are here to pay our respects to Zubeen Garg. One year has passed since the unexpected incident, but Zubeen Garg must get justice,” Bhattacharya said.
