GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday, August 29, visited the Assam Regimental Centre, the headquarters of the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment, in Shillong.

Established in Shillong in 1941 during World War II, the Assam Regimental Centre has a long and distinguished history. Sarma’s visit marked the first visit by a serving Chief Minister of Assam to the Centre after Dispur became the permanent capital of the state. Earlier, former Chief Ministers late Bishnuram Medhi and late Bimala Prasad Chaliha had visited the Centre.
During his visit, Sarma paid homage to soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation by laying a wreath at the War Memorial. He also signed the visitors’ book.
The Chief Minister witnessed demonstrations of combat tactics using drones, as well as jungle lane shooting, commando briefing, tribal trap and reflex shooting range exercises. Army personnel also demonstrated martial arts and karate, showcasing their physical fitness, mental resilience and discipline.
Sarma later attended a special programme at the Centre’s Dah Auditorium, where a documentary on the history of the Assam Regiment was screened. Army personnel presented Bihu dance and martial traditions of warriors from the Northeast, along with other cultural performances.
The Chief Minister also interacted with officers and Army personnel and met the families of 24 Agniveers and 20 ex-servicemen. He held discussions with the Centre Commandant on the prevailing situation and the functioning of the Centre.
Recalling the sacrifices of soldiers who laid down their lives to protect the country’s freedom and territorial integrity, Sarma said their courage, valour and patriotism would continue to inspire generations.
Describing the Assam Regiment as having a glorious history of valour and sacrifice, Sarma said visiting the Assam Regimental Centre and spending time with soldiers and their families was a matter of honour and an inspiring experience.
“The courage of our soldiers is the true strength of our nation. Their supreme sacrifice will remain immortal in the collective memory of us all,” Sarma said.
Lt General Mohit Wadhwa, GOC 101 Area, and Centre Commandant Brigadier Vikas Rai Sandilya were also present during the visit.
