GUWAHATI: Marking World Environment Day, Assam is set to witness one of its largest community-led plantation campaigns, with around 35 lakh women expected to plant 1 crore saplings across the state.

The initiative is being led by members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), highlighting the growing role of women in grassroots environmental and community development efforts.
Sharing the announcement on X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “This World Environment Day, our SHG members will lead one of the largest community driven plantation drives in the State, showing once again how Assam's #NariShakti are driving change at the grassroots.”
The large-scale plantation programme aims to promote environmental conservation, increase green cover and encourage community participation in climate and sustainability initiatives.
