A vibrant celebration of Assam’s spiritual and cultural traditions unfolded at Assam down town University on Sunday, May 10, as the Auniatiya Sanskritik Seva Samiti delivered a Nritya Natika performance showcasing the essence of the state’s Vaishnavite culture and performing arts.
The event witnessed the participation of eminent scholars, cultural personalities, students, artists and guests who gathered to celebrate the rich heritage of Assam through music, dance and devotional storytelling rooted in the Satriya tradition.
One of the major highlights of the programme was the felicitation of Pitambardev Goswami, the 16th Satradhikar of Auniati Satra. Addressing the gathering, he stressed the importance of preserving Assam’s spiritual and cultural values in modern society.
He stated that the cultural traditions of Assam are deeply connected with spirituality, discipline and humanity, adding that art, music and devotion continue to safeguard the moral and cultural foundation of society. He also urged the younger generation to carry forward these traditions with sincerity and pride.
The programme also featured the felicitation of noted scholar and former president of Asom Sahitya Sabha, Surjya Kanta Hazarika. Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted the role of Satras and cultural institutions in preserving Assamese identity, literature and performing arts.
He remarked that Assamese culture continues to thrive because of the dedication of artists, scholars, educators and traditional institutions that work tirelessly to nurture the state’s language and heritage. He further noted that such collaborative initiatives help strengthen cultural awareness within society.
The Nritya Natika performance by the Majuli-based troupe captivated the audience with graceful depictions of Satriya traditions through devotional music, expressive dance and theatrical storytelling inspired by Assam’s Vaishnavite heritage. The performers were appreciated for their artistic excellence and authentic representation of Assamese spiritual culture.
Following the performance, members of the troupe and artists were felicitated for their contribution towards preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Assam. A group interaction and photograph session with dignitaries and organisers was also held.
During the event, N. N. Dutta, Chancellor of Assam down town University, paid tribute to Pitambardev Goswami as a mark of respect for his continued efforts towards safeguarding Assam’s spiritual and cultural legacy.
The formal session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prateeti Barman, who expressed gratitude to the guests, performers, faculty members and students for making the programme successful.
She described the event as more than a cultural showcase, calling it a meaningful exchange of heritage, values and knowledge that inspires students to remain connected to their roots.
The celebrations continued with a lunch hosted for guests and performers, followed by cultural performances by AdtU students. The presentations highlighted the diverse cultural traditions of the northeastern region through performances such as Jeng Bihu, Mukoli Bihu, Husori, Bordoishikhila, Baisagu, Pisu Mising, Arunachali, Tripuri, Manipuri and Nepali folk dances.
The programme served as a vibrant platform for promoting the shared cultural identity of the Northeast while strengthening ties between academic institutions and traditional cultural organisations.
