Assam Cabinet Approves UCC Bill Banning Live-In Relationship Among Others; STs Exempted


 

GUWAHATI: The Assam government will table the Uniform Civil Code  bill in the state Assembly on the last day of the upcoming session, on  May 26. The state Cabinet under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma approved the draft of the bill in its first meeting on Wednesday, May 13.

Scheduled tribes, both falling under hills and plains category, will be kept out of the ambit of the UCC, the chief minister said in a press conference.

According to the chief minister, the bill will also exempt religious traditions, rituals and customs.

“Way of practising one’s religion will be completely out of the ambit of the UCC,” Sarma said. He categorically said that the government doesn’t want to intrude into the religious practices of the people.

“We are mainly focusing on a few things. We want to set a minimum age for marriage, ban polygamy, give property rights to daughters, compulsory registration of marriage, frame procedure for divorce, and ban live-in relationship.”
