‘Assam Chose Development Over Arrogance’: Himanta Sarma Hits Out at Gaurav Gogoi in Assembly

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, May 26, launched a sharp political attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi during his reply to the Motion of Thanks on the Governor’s address in the Assam Legislative Assembly, accusing the Congress leader of arrogance and opposing key infrastructure projects aimed at transforming the state.

Without naming Gogoi initially, Sarma told the House that a senior Congress leader who had secured a massive victory in the Lok Sabha elections just two years ago was later rejected by voters in the Assembly polls because of what he described as an “arrogant attitude”.

“A prominent leader, who had won the Lok Sabha election with a huge margin just two years ago, was defeated in the Assembly polls because of his pride. His arrogance ultimately led to his downfall,” Sarma said.

The Chief Minister alleged that Gogoi had consistently targeted his family and opposed several flagship infrastructure projects that the BJP-led government considers crucial for Assam’s future growth and connectivity.

Stepping up his criticism, Sarma referred to Gogoi’s opposition to projects such as the Kaziranga elevated corridor, the Jorhat flyover and the proposed Gohpur-Numaligarh underwater tunnel.

“He repeatedly attacked my family and objected to major projects like the Kaziranga elevated corridor, the Jorhat flyover and the Gohpur-Numaligarh underwater tunnel. These initiatives will significantly improve connectivity, tourism and the regional economy, but he chose to oppose them,” the Chief Minister said.

Sarma argued that the Assembly election results reflected public endorsement of the NDA government’s development-focused agenda and a rejection of what he termed “negative politics”.

“The people of Assam have clearly voted for peace and development. They have rejected the politics of obstruction and negativity. This verdict sends a strong message that Assam wants progress, not arrogance and protests,” he said.

One of the leading faces of the Congress campaign in Assam, Gogoi had contested the 2026 Assembly elections from the Jorhat constituency but lost to BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami.

Using the electoral outcome to reinforce his political message, Sarma said opposing large-scale infrastructure projects demonstrated a disconnect from the aspirations of the people, particularly their growing demand for better roads, improved connectivity, tourism growth and expanded economic opportunities across Assam.
