Sharing the update on social media, Saikia said that the airport authorities had informed him via email that automated Assamese announcements would become operational at the airport terminals within the next 10 days.
The development comes a day after Saikia, along with retired IPS officer Jyotirmoy Chakrabarty and retired ACS officer Mukul Chandra Gogoi, submitted a letter to the Chief Airport Officer of LGBI Airport, urging the authorities to include Assamese in public announcements at Terminal 2.
In their letter, the three retired civil servants expressed concern that airport announcements were being made only in English and Hindi, while Assamese—the principal regional language of the state—was being omitted. They pointed out that the Ministry of Civil Aviation's guidelines recommend the use of the regional language alongside Hindi and English for airport announcements.
The letter also highlighted that the inclusion of Assamese is not only a matter of linguistic recognition but is also important from a passenger safety perspective.
