GUWAHATI: A group of five traders was allegedly looted of ₹21.85 lakh in cash and five mobile phones in a daylight incident near the Radisson Blu Hotel area in Guwahati, on Thursday, May 21.
According to reports, the incident took place near the Boragaon flyover stretch. The victims were returning from Umsning in Meghalaya after selling an excavator and were carrying a large amount of cash when they were targeted.
Police sources said the traders were first followed by a four-wheeler vehicle from the Boragaon flyover area, which continued trailing them until they reached near a petrol pump close to the Radisson Blu Hotel, where they were intercepted.
The accused reportedly posed as security personnel and stepped out wearing army-style clothing, caps, and uniforms resembling military attire. They allegedly stopped the vehicle on the pretext of conducting a drug search operation and claimed the victims were involved in drug-related activity.
During the alleged search, the miscreants forced the traders out of the vehicle, checked their belongings, and snatched a bag containing ₹21.85 lakh in cash, five mobile phones, and the car keys.
The victims further stated that the accused misled them by saying a police officer from Jalukbari Police Station was on the way and instructed them to report there before fleeing the spot with the cash and valuables.
Police have launched an investigation. No arrests have been made so far.
