The project will transform a stretch of NH-27 into a reinforced auxiliary runway capable of handling both military transport aircraft and civilian emergency operations during national security crises, natural disasters, and relief missions.
The proposed facility is being designed under strict military specifications and is expected to function as a vital logistics and rapid-response hub in the Northeast. Authorities said the project will also support troop deployment, emergency supply operations, and disaster management efforts in the region.
According to details, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will coordinate with local authorities to enforce strict zoning regulations and maintain clear approach paths by preventing construction near the designated corridor.
This will become Assam’s second highway landing facility after the first such emergency airstrip was operationalised at Moran near Dibrugarh. The earlier facility marked a significant milestone in India’s defence preparedness in the Northeast, enabling fighter aircraft operations on a national highway stretch.
