GUWAHATI: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has clarified that reports claiming Nepal has imposed a ban or suspension on the import of Indian mangoes are "factually incorrect and misleading."

In a press release, the ministry said that the Government of Nepal, through its Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Center (National Plant Protection Organization of Nepal), confirmed on Wednesday, June 10, that no ban has been imposed on Indian mango imports.
According to the clarification, imports of Indian mangoes into Nepal continue to be permitted, subject to prescribed phytosanitary requirements. Import permits and release orders are being issued upon compliance with these requirements and the submission of valid phytosanitary certificates issued by the Government of India.
The ministry further stated that exports of Indian mangoes to Nepal remain uninterrupted. Since January 2026, India has exported 149 consignments of mangoes, amounting to 2,005 metric tonnes (MT), to Nepal. In June alone, 18 consignments totalling 266 MT have already been exported.
The clarification comes amid concerns arising from Nepal's recent revision of certain import conditions, including the introduction of a requirement for Hot Water Treatment (HWT) for mango imports. The ministry said India continues to facilitate exports in accordance with the revised requirements.
At the same time, India has conveyed its concerns regarding the implementation of new phytosanitary measures without prior consultation. The matter is being pursued through appropriate bilateral channels in line with the provisions of the World Trade Organization's Sanitary and Phytosanitary (WTO SPS) Agreement and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) framework.
The ministry has urged stakeholders, traders and the public to rely on official communications for information related to import and export regulations and disregard unverified reports suggesting trade restrictions on Indian mango exports to Nepal.
