Taking to social media platform X, the Chief Minister hailed the achievement as a significant step towards strengthening Assam's green cover and credited women across the state for spearheading the campaign.
"Assam has reached a historic milestone. More than 1.2 crore saplings have been planted in just over eight hours through a people-driven movement led by our women, setting a new benchmark in the state's afforestation efforts," Sarma stated.
The large-scale plantation drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from lakhs of women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), alongside government officials, community organisations, volunteers and local residents across Assam.
Expressing gratitude to the women who played a pivotal role in the campaign, the Chief Minister congratulated them for their contribution towards environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The initiative forms part of the Assam government's broader strategy to promote ecological preservation, expand forest and green cover, and encourage greater public involvement in environmental protection efforts.
