GUWAHATI: In a major upset in Assam’s ongoing vote counting, senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia is trailing significantly in the Nazira Assembly constituency.
According to official data released by the Election Commission as of 1:30 pm on Monday, May 4, Saikia is behind by a margin of 22,187 votes. The veteran legislator has secured 25,145 votes so far, while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mayur Borgohain has surged ahead with 47,332 votes.
Nazira, traditionally regarded as a Congress stronghold, appears to be witnessing a dramatic shift in voter preference this election cycle. Saikia has represented the seat since 2011 and has been a prominent political figure in the region.
Adding to his political stature, Saikia hails from an influential family with deep roots in the politics of Assam. His father, former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, and mother, Hemoprava Saikia, both previously served as legislators from the same constituency.
With counting still underway, all eyes remain on Nazira as trends suggest a potential breakthrough for the BJP in one of Congress’s long-held bastions.
