The announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference held after the first cabinet meeting of the new government on Wednesday, May 13.
Saikia, who serves as the state’s highest law officer, will continue to represent the Assam government in key legal and constitutional matters. The reappointment is seen as a reaffirmation of the government’s trust in his legal expertise.
The development comes after Devajit Saikia tendered his resignation from the post on May 6 following the completion of the previous government’s term in office.
In a statement shared on social media, Saikia said he submitted his resignation “keeping and upholding the high tradition and constitutional practice.”
Saikia described his previous tenure as a matter of “immense honour and privilege” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the state in the constitutional office of Advocate General.
