GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet has approved an allocation of ₹109 crore for various infrastructure and development projects at Gauhati University, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday, August 30.

The allocation will cover the construction of a G+5 academic building, a G+4 hostel for international students, a boys’ hostel for students from Assam and a staff quarters building for Grade D employees.
As part of the development plan, the Birinchi Kumar Baruah Auditorium will also be modernised, while seminar halls will be added to the Krishna Kanta Handique Library.
Sarma said the ₹109-crore allocation is the first phase of a larger ₹250-crore funding plan for Gauhati University.
“We will allocate ₹250 crore in total to Gauhati University. ₹109 crore has been allocated as the first phase of that amount. If this is properly utilised, we will release the remaining ₹140 crore for further infrastructural development,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister said the projects will be formally initiated during the visit of the Vice President of India to Gauhati University on September 7.
The proposed projects are aimed at strengthening the university’s academic and residential infrastructure and improving facilities for students, international scholars and university staff.
