GUWAHATI: Ahead of an upcoming visit by a delegation from Japan, civic agencies have launched a cleanup and beautification drive at multiple locations across Guwahati. Tayabulla Road and the adjoining Digholi Pukhuri area are among the sites where the work has been carried out.

Teams from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) were seen clearing roadside debris and removing obstructions from sidewalks at various points in the city, including Tayabulla Road, on Tuesday, June 16. Officials said the work is part of a broader, citywide push to present a cleaner, more organised face of Guwahati ahead of the delegation's arrival.
Alongside the GMC's efforts, the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has deployed workers across these locations to untangle and reorganise the dense, overhanging clusters of electric cables that have long lined the city's streets, including the stretch near Digholi Pukhuri.
An APDCL worker present at the Tayabulla Road site said the tangled wires were nothing unusual for the locality. "There are usual complaints about cables," the worker said, suggesting that the clutter predates the delegation visit and is a recurring civic issue rather than a one-off problem specific to this stretch.
Residents near Tayabulla Road reported a power outage lasting roughly three hours during the cable work there. APDCL confirmed the disruption, attributing it to the ongoing reorganisation of the lines, and assured that electricity supply had since been restored.
While the immediate trigger for the cleanup appears to be the diplomatic visit, residents may be hoping the improvement particularly to the cable network to outlast the occasion across the city, not just at the showcased stretches. Authorities have not yet indicated whether the cable reorganisation is a temporary fix or part of a longer-term plan.
