Indian Women’s Football Team Reclaim SAFF Championship Title With 3-1 Win Over Bangladesh


 

GUWAHATI: India reclaimed the SAFF Women’s Championship title after a seven-year gap, defeating defending champions Bangladesh 3-1 in the final in Goa on Saturday, June 6, to secure a record-extending sixth crown.

Goals from Pyari Xaxa, Sanfida Nongrum and Lynda Kom Serto sealed victory for the hosts, who completed an unbeaten campaign to regain the regional title.

The triumph marked India's return to the summit of South Asian women’s football after Bangladesh won the previous two editions of the tournament.

India also swept the major individual honours, with Aveka Singh finishing as the top scorer with four goals, Sanfida Nongrum being named the Most Valuable Player and Panthoi Chanu Elangbam winning the Best Goalkeeper award.

Congratulating the team, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Congratulations to the Indian Women’s Football Team on winning the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026. They have played excellently through the tournament. This will encourage more youngsters to play football in the coming times.”

He also extended his best wishes to the team for its future endeavours.
