Sharing the update, Sangma said the species, scientifically known as Neolissochilus hexagonolepis, is locally referred to as Khasaw in Khasi and Na-rang in Garo, and will now represent the state’s aquatic biodiversity.

He noted that Meghalaya did not previously have a designated state fish, unlike several other states, and the decision was taken to recognise and protect a species native to the region. The move is also aimed at strengthening conservation efforts for the fish, which holds ecological and cultural significance.

The Chocolate Mahseer is a freshwater species found in the fast-flowing rivers and streams of the northeastern Himalayas. Known for its popularity among anglers, it is also considered an indicator of healthy river ecosystems.

However, the species has been facing increasing threats due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and declining water quality in recent years, prompting the government to take steps towards its protection.
