GUWAHATI – Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Atul Bora on May 5, Tuesday, asserted that the allocation of ministerial berths for his party in the third term of the BJP-led government will be left entirely to the discretion of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP leadership.

Speaking to the media from the AGP headquarters in Ambari after the declaration of the 2026 Assam Assembly election results, Bora addressed questions regarding his party's representation in the new cabinet.
In a way, he prioritised the alliance's collective vision over individual party demands.
In the Himanta Biswa Sarma government from 2021 to 2026, AGP had two ministers — Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta — in the Cabinet.
The AGP was relatively successful in the recent elections, touching double digits by securing 10 seats, out of the 126 seats, a slight improvement from the 9 seats the party won in the 2021 assembly elections.
Outlining the party's immediate agenda, Bora announced that AGP leaders are scheduled to meet with the BJP leadership at the state headquarters today evening.
Additionally, the party will convene its first legislature party meeting tomorrow at their headquarters to strategize for the upcoming days.
Reflecting on the sweeping victory of the ruling alliance, the AGP chief described the mandate as "unprecedented" and asserted that the results "will be written in the annals of history in golden words."
Bora credited the success to a combination of state and central leadership.
"We always said NDA is invincible, because of the Chief Minister's farsightedness and strong leadership," he remarked.
He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for consistently giving what he said priority to the Northeast region.
Highlighting that the people of Assam have witnessed unparalleled progress in recent years, Bora added, "We are sure our NDA partners will continue to work for the development of the state under Himanta Biswa Sarma in the next five years."
Taking a sharp dig at the opposition, Bora attributed the total failure of the Congress party in the 2026 elections to what he termed a fundamental lack of understanding of the electorate.
Launching a scathing attack on Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, Atul Bora stated that the Congress leadership suffers from a "total disconnect between the people and the voters."
"People have totally rejected Congress," he continued.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a clear majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly, winning 82 seats and leading the ruling NDA alliance to a decisive mandate. With allies Bodoland Peoples Front (BOPF) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) adding 10 seats each, the NDA’s total tally stands at 102 seats.
The Indian National Congress (INC) finished a distant second with 19 seats. Other parties registered a limited presence, with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal (RJRD) securing two seats each, while the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won one seat, completing the full tally of 126 constituencies.
