Mitsubishi Chemical Engineering Eyes Semiconductor Investment in Assam, Holds Talks with Assam CM


 

GUWAHATI: Mitsubishi Chemical Engineering Corporation (MEC), one of Japan's leading engineering firms, has expressed interest in investing in Assam's emerging semiconductor sector following high-level talks with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Dispur.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, July 7, and facilitated by Connect India Japan (CIJ), focused on exploring investment opportunities in Assam's semiconductor and chemical engineering sectors, marking another step in strengthening India-Japan industrial cooperation.

Sharing details of the meeting on X, Chief Minister Sarma said, "Teruo Fujita San and Tomofumi Koyama San of Mitsubishi Chemical Group met me today to discuss investment opportunities in Assam's semiconductor and chemical engineering sectors."

"We agreed to remain closely engaged as we take these discussions forward," he added.

During the discussions, Sarma assured the visiting delegation of the Assam government's full support for Japanese investors. "When you are coming to Assam, you are a part of government," he told the MEC representatives, reaffirming the state's commitment to facilitating investments and fostering long-term industrial partnerships.

Members of the Japanese delegation appreciated the Assam government's hospitality, proactive leadership and the speed of official engagement. Both sides expressed optimism about building a long-term partnership, with MEC exploring opportunities to establish a stronger presence in the state in the years ahead.

As a gesture of goodwill, the delegation presented the Chief Minister with a **Katana**, the traditional Japanese samurai sword symbolising Japan's craftsmanship, discipline and cultural heritage. Sarma thanked the delegation for the gift.

The meeting was facilitated by Connect India Japan (CIJ), a bilateral platform dedicated to strengthening India-Japan relations. CIJ founder Nupur Tewari accompanied the delegation and presented the Chief Minister with the inaugural bilingual *Connect India Japan Magazine*, published in both English and Japanese.

The first edition highlights the life and legacy of Rash Behari Bose, the Indian freedom fighter who later settled in Japan and played a pivotal role in deepening the historical ties between the two nations. The Chief Minister appreciated the publication and its emphasis on the shared heritage of India and Japan.

Mitsubishi Chemical Engineering Corporation, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Chemical Group, is renowned for its expertise in industrial, chemical and semiconductor infrastructure. The company is currently exploring opportunities to contribute to India's rapidly expanding semiconductor ecosystem, with Assam emerging as a key investment destination.
