The incident occurred on Sunday, April 19, at around 9:30 PM during a spell of heavy rainfall. The city witnessed incessant rainfall on Sunday evening, triggering flash floods across several low-lying areas and severely affecting normal life.
The deceased, identified as Payal Nath (30), a resident of Gorol Manasa Mandir in Maligaon, was reportedly returning home from work when she accidentally fell into the drain.
The tragic incident had raised serious concerns over the safety of open drains in the city, particularly during periods of heavy rain when waterlogging makes such hazards difficult to detect. Following the incident, the concerned drain has now been covered as a preventive measure.
While the concerned drain has now been covered as a preventive measure, several other drains in different parts of the city remain uncovered, posing a serious danger to the public, especially with the approaching monsoon season.
