GUWAHATI: A special cycling rally will be held at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium on Sunday, June 7, to celebrate World Bicycle Day 2026 and promote fitness, sustainability, and eco-friendly mobility.

The event is being organised under the ‘Sundays on Cycle’ initiative of the Fit India Movement, a nationwide campaign aimed at encouraging people to adopt active and healthy lifestyles.
The announcement was made during a press conference jointly addressed by Sports Authority of India (SAI) Regional Centre Guwahati Executive Director Devendra Kumar Mittal and Assistant Director Ananya Sarma. Prominent Guwahati-based cyclists Kaushik Guha and Prince Kumar Deka were also present.
Highlighting the importance of cycling, the organisers noted that in rapidly growing urban centres such as Guwahati, where traffic congestion and air pollution are emerging concerns, cycling offers a practical, affordable, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
The cycling rally is open to participants of all age groups. Those interested in taking part are required to bring their own bicycles. The event will feature a group ride along a designated route, while Zumba and Yoga sessions will be organised on the sidelines to further promote physical well-being.
SAI has appealed to residents of Guwahati to join the initiative and contribute towards building a healthier and more sustainable community through cycling and other fitness activities.
As part of the programme, Sri Sri Aniruddhadeva Sports University will be felicitated with the Vehicle Free Campus Certificate under the Fit India Empowering Renewable and Non-Polluting Mobility Initiative in recognition of its efforts to promote sustainable transportation.
The Sundays on Cycle initiative has received recognition from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the global governing body for cycling, underscoring its significance in promoting cycling culture across the country.
World Bicycle Day is observed annually on June 3 following a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on April 12, 2018, recognising the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, and environmentally sustainable means of transport.
