GUWAHATI: In a significant development in the high-profile Zubeen Garg death case, a special fast-track court in Guwahati on Wednesday, April 30, rejected the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the prime accused in the matter.
The order was pronounced after the court had earlier reserved its decision upon completion of a two-day hearing on the bail petition. With the plea rejected, Mahanta will continue to remain in judicial custody.
The development comes a day after the same court ordered the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Siddharth Sharma, the late artist’s former manager and another prime accused in the case, as part of the ongoing investigation. The court had also directed the seizure of Mahavir Aqua, a packaged drinking water unit located at Chhaygaon under the Soigaon Industrial Development Centre in Assam, reportedly owned by Sharma.
The case has drawn widespread public attention since the death of noted singer Zubeen Garg, triggering outrage and calls for a comprehensive investigation. Following a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), multiple individuals were charge-sheeted in connection with the incident, including Mahanta.
Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025, while swimming during a yacht outing in Singapore, where he had travelled as a cultural brand ambassador for the North East India Festival. He reportedly lost consciousness while swimming during the outing.
The matter continues to be heard by the fast-track court as legal proceedings move forward.
