GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon, with the seasonal rains covering additional parts of Northeast India and the Bay of Bengal region.

According to the IMD, the Southwest Monsoon advanced on June 7 into some more parts of the west-central and entire northeast Bay of Bengal, as well as additional areas of the northwest Bay of Bengal. The monsoon has now covered the entire states of Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, besides extending into parts of Tripura, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The IMD has indicated that conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the monsoon over the next two to three days.
The weather agency also said that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to progress into additional parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra and Karnataka, as well as parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The remaining parts of Tamil Nadu and the southwest Bay of Bengal are also expected to receive monsoon coverage during this period.
In the Northeast, the IMD has forecast further advancement into additional areas of the region as the monsoon continues its steady march across the country.
The Southwest Monsoon is crucial for India's agriculture sector and water resources, providing nearly 70 per cent of the country's annual rainfall.
