The incident involved flight LX147, an Airbus A330 bound for Zurich, which began its takeoff run at around 1:08 am. Subsequently, one of the aircraft’s engines malfunctioned and caught fire, prompting the crew to immediately halt the takeoff as a safety measure.
All 228 passengers, along with four infants on board, were evacuated on the runway using emergency slides. Authorities said six passengers sustained injuries during the evacuation and were taken to hospital for treatment. No crew members were reported to be injured.

In a statement, SWISS said it had set up a task force in response to the incident. “Shortly after the start of the takeoff, an issue occurred with one of the engines. The crew rejected the takeoff and, as a precaution, initiated an evacuation,” the airline said.
The airline added that alternative arrangements, including stairs, were provided for passengers who were unable to use the emergency slides. Ground teams are assisting passengers with rebooking options and hotel accommodations where required.
SWISS also stated that its technical team will travel to Delhi to investigate the cause of the engine failure. “We are committed to fully understanding what led to this incident. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority,” the statement added.
