GUWAHATI: Rupali Langthasa, the newly elected BJP MLA from Dima Hasao, on Thursday, May 14, said the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to be introduced by the Assam government would not impact tribal communities or interfere with their traditional customs and practices.

Speaking in Guwahati, Langthasa asserted that the cultural identity and way of life of indigenous tribal groups would remain safeguarded under the proposed legislation.
“The UCC will not affect tribal communities. Our traditions and customs will continue as they have for generations. There is no threat to tribal society from this law,” she said.
Her remarks came a day after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government is preparing to introduce the Uniform Civil Code during the next session of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The Chief Minister had also clarified that hill tribes and protected tribal communities would be exempted from the scope of the proposed law.
The proposed UCC is expected to address issues such as marriage registration, inheritance rights, live-in relationships, and a uniform legal age for marriage.
