In a letter dated May 4, to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, he said the results did not meet expectations and accepted his role in the outcome.
Calling the verdict “deeply disappointing”, Singh said the party could not meet the expectations of the people of Assam despite its efforts. He said his resignation would make way for new leadership and help the organisation move in a fresh direction.
The resignation comes against the backdrop of the party’s electoral performance in the state. In the Assam Assembly election 2026, the BJP won 82 seats while the Congress secured 19.
Singh thanked the party leadership, workers and the people of Assam for their support during his tenure and said he would continue to work for the party in any role assigned to him.
