GUWAHATI: Assam is set to revive 71 traditional beels across the state under Project S.W.I.F.T., a major initiative aimed at restoring water bodies, increasing fish production and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.

The ₹796.88-crore project, supported by the Asian Development Bank, will rejuvenate 71 beels across 23 districts, covering nearly 4,000 hectares of water bodies.
The project aims to significantly increase fish production, with a target of producing 6,000 metric tonnes of fish and around 570 million fish fry annually.
Project S.W.I.F.T. will also focus on strengthening the livelihoods of fishing communities. Around 302 boats and nets will be distributed, while 1,000 youth will receive grants of ₹50,000 each to support livelihood opportunities.
The initiative will further establish 30 fish feed units and 100 fish processing units for Self-Help Groups, helping strengthen the fisheries value chain and create new income opportunities at the grassroots level.
Assam’s beels have long been closely connected to the lives, livelihoods and culture of local communities. Through Project S.W.I.F.T., these vital water bodies will receive renewed attention, combining ecological restoration with economic opportunities.
The project is expected to help restore aquatic ecosystems, improve fish production and strengthen livelihood opportunities for fishing communities across the state.
