Guwahati Celebrates India’s Selection for Commonwealth Games 2030 with Special ‘Sundays on Cycle’ Drive


 

GUWAHATI: The Sports Authority of India (SAI), Regional Centre Guwahati, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, organised a special edition of the ‘Sundays on Cycle’ programme on Sunday, May 24, to celebrate India’s selection to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Held under the banner #CWG2030InBharat at the IIT Guwahati campus, the event formed part of the nationwide 75th edition of the Fit India ‘Sundays on Cycle’ initiative, which was organised across more than 8,000 locations on Sunday to mark Commonwealth Games Day and celebrate India’s selection to host the 2030 Games in Ahmedabad.

Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse attended the event as the chief guest. Commonwealth Games medallists Sushila Devi Likmabam and Jayanta Talukdar, along with IIT Guwahati Director Devendra Jalihal, were also present.

According to organisers, the programme aimed to promote fitness, public participation in sports and awareness around India hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Addressing participants, Khadse said the ‘Sundays on Cycle’ initiative was being conducted every Sunday across the country under the Fit India Movement.

Despite rainfall in Guwahati, the event witnessed participation from athletes, students, cycling enthusiasts and residents. Activities included a cycling rally across the IIT Guwahati campus, yoga sessions and a Thang-Ta martial arts performance.

The organisers also felicitated winners of Commonwealth Games-themed quiz and drawing competitions conducted by SAI Regional Centre Guwahati.

During the programme, Sushila Devi and Jayanta Talukdar interacted with participants and shared their experiences of representing India at international sporting events.

SAI Regional Centre Guwahati said a city-wide special edition of ‘Sundays on Cycle’ will also be organised on June 7 to mark World Bicycle Day.
