GUWAHATI: A gold theft case has come to light in Assam’s Jorhat, where a young man, identified as Yash Dhanuka, allegedly took gold jewellery worth over ₹50 lakh and ₹2 lakh in cash from his own house while his parents were out of the state.

According to Dhanuka’s account, he was encouraged by his friends Jitendra Somani and Rohit Prasad to take the jewellery and cash. He later claimed that he used part of the money to buy an iPhone worth ₹1.5 lakh and pay for an Arunachal Pradesh trip for his girlfriend, whom he had known for more than seven years.
Somani, who works as a local journalist, allegedly took the gold, sold it in Golaghat and gave ₹7 lakh to Yash Dhanuka who was allegedly unaware of the actual value of the gold, according to Dhanuka. Dhanuka accused Somani of running away with the remaining money.
Dhanuka also claimed that the woman maintained good terms with him only when he had money.
Following the incident, Dhanuka reportedly ran away for a few days and was later recovered from Ahmedabad.
The family subsequently approached Jorhat Police to complain against Somani. However, they reportedly found that Somani was already missing, while his family had filed a missing report.
Meanwhile, Rohit Prasad, in a public statement, denied having knowledge of the theft. He said Somani had asked him whether he knew of any businesses dealing in gold, following which he helped make a contact.
Prasad also alleged that Dhanuka had a previous record of running away.
In a separate public statement, Somani gave a different account of the incident. He claimed that Dhanuka had approached him and sought his help in selling his personal gold. According to Somani, although he initially hesitated, he later helped Dhanuka sell the gold and paid him ₹12 lakh.
The statements from Dhanuka, Prasad and Somani differ significantly over the circumstances surrounding the gold, its sale and the money allegedly received from the transaction.
Jorhat Police are yet to issue an official statement on the matter or confirm any of the allegations made by the individuals involved.
