GUWAHATI: An open and incomplete drain beneath the Maharaj Prithu flyover in Guwahati’s Ambari area has become a major safety hazard for pedestrians and local shopkeepers, with repeated complaints to authorities yielding no action.

According to locals, the drain was demolished in January to make way for a new one. While construction of the flyover has since been completed, work on the drain remains unfinished, leaving a dangerously exposed stretch along the footpath.
Shopkeepers in the area said the situation has become a daily ordeal, particularly for those using the footpath. A local trader said that he has submitted written complaints to the PWD and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation multiple times, but no action has been taken so far.
The issue worsened during recent rainfall, when waterlogging made the open drain difficult to spot. On Sunday, at least four people reportedly fell into the drain amid flooding, raising serious concerns over public safety.
Residents and business owners have urged authorities to take immediate steps to complete the drain work and ensure proper safety measures to prevent further accidents.
